From the Dancers Interest Meeting Held in Brisbane on the 10th July 2025

The Australian National Square Dance Conventions Board has approved a bid to hold the 2028 Australian National Square Dance Convention.

A Steering Committee was formed to facilitate the organization of a National Square
Dance Convention in NSW in 2028 and present the bid.

Below is a brief overview of the proposal

The Steering Committee:
This Committee consists of Helen C, Anna-Lee Hodalj, Colin C, Lynne Burn, Wendy Alexander and James Harragon.

Proposed Location:
We have made tentative contact with Shoalhaven City Council to facilitate the hiring of the
Shoalhaven Indoor Sports Arena in Bomaderry. Recently renovated, this center has a sprung wood triple basketball court, single sprung basketball court, 3 meeting rooms, and onsite catering available.

Proposed Venue:
The Main Hall can be segmented with drop-down curtains into a single basketball court and a double. Seating can be placed on the outskirts of the double without affecting the dancefloor.
The segmented single will have tables and chairs placed for socializing, as well as having space between and outside the halls available to sit and relax. Seating is tiered in the single basketball court (Hall 2) and can hold 600 seated.

Meeting Rooms:
The Meeting rooms in the Mezzanine are carpeted and modern with integrated technology i.e. screens and projectors.
Staging will need to be brought in for both halls.

Parking:
Parking is plentiful for all sized vehicles, with overflow across the road.

The Area:
The greater Shoalhaven is a holiday destination, boasting over 100 beaches, and is situated
amongst some of the most beautiful National Parks – including Jervis Bay – and some
breathtaking views from the nearby Cambewarra Mountain lookout.

Accommodation:
Because it is such a destination, accommodation is varied and available.
Within 15 minutes
drive there are multiple caravan parks, and Hotel/Motels.

There is also the local Showground that offers powered sites for caravan and campervan travelers, just across the river.

Travel:
Bomaderry is 2.5hrs from Sydney, or 2hrs from Canberra, and it is about a 15min walk from the local train station to the Venue.
Car hire is also available in the area.

Local Attractions:
One of the other things this area is know for is it’s wine. There are many wineries in the
Shoalhaven, all with multiple accolades to their names, for their food as well.

From the attendance trend of the last few conventions, we are budgeting on 400 attendees.
We believe it is financially viable and will not present a financial risk.

When:
We would like to continue the current trend of having the Nationals during or near to School
Holidays, and it is proposed to hold it in Early April  3rd to the 7th.
